Tap dancing is an amazing skill to have for both children and adults. A great way to keep fit, develop musicality, rhythm and co-ordination and much more.
If you are thinking about giving tap classes a go, why not try out these 5 basic steps to get you started. You don’t even need tap shoes to try this – pop some trainers on and give it a go!
- Ball Heel
Lift the foot up off of the ground, and place the ball of the foot on the floor with pressure through the instep. Then lower the heel to the floor to make the second sound.
2. Ball Beat
Starting with a flat foot, lift the ball of the foot off of the floor (keeping the heel on the floor) and beat the ball to the floor.
3. Stamp
Lift the full foot off of the floor and beat the full foot evenly into the floor.
4. Heel Dig
Lift the full foot off of the floor and dig the heel only into the floor.
5. Shuffle
Lift the foot off of the floor and brush the foot forwards, making a sound with the ball of the foot. Then brush the foot backwards, creating another sound with the ball of the foot. Tip: don’t let the heel come into contact with the floor.
Once you’ve tackled these 5 basic steps, you’ll be able to start joining them together. Before long, you’ll be able to create short combinations. Give this one a go:
